Are You Considering The Abortion Pill?

Vida Medical Clinic does not provide or refer for abortions. For your health and safety, here are some facts and information to consider before making an abortion decision.

The first step is to confirm that the pregnancy is viable (heartbeat present), to determine how far along you are (gestational age), and to prove location of pregnancy. This should be verified by an ultrasound. STI testing is also recommended prior to an abortion. A detailed medical history is also necessary to ensure the abortion procedure is safe and appropriate for you.

What's the process? How does the abortion pill work?

Step 1: Mifepristone

The abortion pill blocks progesterone, which is necessary for the uterus to support a pregnancy. This causes the embryo to stop developing and the uterine lining to break down.

However, if you change your mind and want to continue the pregnancy, the effects of the abortion pill may be reversed with the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol. Call us to learn more.

Step 2: Misoprostol

Misoprostol helps the uterus to contract and expel the embryo, embryonic sac, and lining, which leads to the developing baby passing through your vagina. This process can take up to 48 hours and may cause heavy bleeding, strong cramps, and other symptoms.

(see risks and side effects below)

Step 3: Clinic Visit

It is highly recommended that you return to the prescribing clinic for a follow-up exam 2 weeks after taking Misoprostol to confirm whether or not the medical abortion was fully successful.

(this is a very important step because if the abortion was not fully complete, then any parts left behind could cause an infection and have permanent effects)

What are the side effects and risks of the abortion pill?

Like any medical procedure, there are definitely risks with the abortion pill. Incomplete abortion is a risk, which could lead to a second procedure with additional side effects.

Risks and Side Effects of a Medical Abortion

Heavy or prolonged bleeding and cramping

Fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Infection

Blood Clots

Incomplete abortion

Hemorrhaging

Allergic reaction

Retained tissue

Continued Pregnancy

Severe reactions to the medication, infections, or ectopic pregnancy may be severe enough to be life-threatening. The abortion pill does not end or treat an ectopic pregnancy.

It is crucial that you contact a medical professional if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Excessive bleeding that fills up more than 2 pads within 1 hour and occurs for 2 hours or more

Passing large blood clots that occur for 2 hours or more

A fever of 100.4°F or higher

Nausea (with or without vomiting) that lasts for more than 24 hours

Diarrhea that lasts for more than 24 hours

Bad smelling discharge

Pregnancy symptoms

Extreme depression and/or suicidal thoughts

What’s a self-managed abortion?

A “self-managed abortion” (which some people call an “at-home abortion”) is when someone finds and takes abortion pills to end a pregnancy without the help of a doctor or nurse. If you are considering a self-managed abortion, it's important to remember that there may be  risks to buying and using abortion pills outside of the health care system, or online.

How effective is the abortion pill?

The rate of failure is between 2% and 8% (2). Successful termination is more likely if you are in the early stages of your pregnancy. Even though it can be dangerous to take abortion medications later in pregnancy or outside of the intended approval period, you have time to make this very important decision.

What does the abortion pill cost?

Medical abortion cost ranges from around $300 up to $800.

If the abortion pill fails and your pregnancy continues, you will also have to pay for a second abortion procedure. Contact us to confidentially talk about your specific circumstances.
